A set of rules and advice given to webmaster by search engines in order to aid websites in ranking better. The guidelines typically contain what an engine might consider to be spam or manipulation, might give advice on how the engine indexes content, and sometimes even explains how parts of the algorithm works. Websites found to be in violation of the guidelines can be punished by engines with reduced rankings or by being removed completely.
