Rand Fishkin – SEO Apps Don’t Make Sense

Updated: While some SEO’s agreed with me on Twitter it would seem the overwhelming opinion of the /r/bigseo community is that mobile apps are not needed. Russ Jones, a developer with Moz, chimed in saying Moz works to make their tools mobile friendly, but they don’t see a need to make any apps. Thanks everyone for the great discussion https://www.reddit.com/r/bigseo/comments/4358dv/seo_apps/

Rand Fishkin is a lovable guy followed by thousands of marketers and founder of one of my favorite marketing tool companies. He recently tweeted out a chart he uses in his presentations showing the growth of Mobile internet compared to desktop. When asked why Moz doesn’t yet have an app then, he responded that he didn’t think it makes sense.

So mobile is the future of search, but not the future for SEO tool providers. Odd.

Thankfully I wasn’t alone in my thinking that indeed it was a good idea as a few other SEO / Digital Marketers jumped into the thread to give ideas to Rand / Moz freely and briefly explain why they would be helpful. Here’s a few of those ideas in case any intrepid startups out there want to make them, feel free to add your own ideas in the comments.

  1. An app that shows your Moz ranking data with a quick and easy chart
  2. An app that shows the Mozcast forecast
  3. An app that shows competitive intelligence data from Moz
  4. A fully functioning Open Site Explorer app
  5. A mobile Mozbar app
  6. An app that shows how long it takes a webpage to load over mobile networks

Please Moz, make some mobile apps, it’s time we moved into the digital age along with our clients.
