User Generated Content

User Generated Content
noun
A type of content that is placed onto a platform by the users of that platform. Often times UGC conforms to the parameters set by the website host or owners. For example a video hosting website might restrict the file size of uploaded videos or the length of hosted videos by time. The UGC site/app Vine created 10 second videos. Websites that host UGC content often start off as or morph into Social Media websites with popular examples including YouTube and Instagram.

UGC doesn’t have to be from a popular Social Media site, companies can ask users to send in User Generated Content by setting parameters and having them send it in via a web form or their own portal.

“The popular chip brand had a user generated content contest for a commercial during certain football game.”

“When rapper Lil Bizzy Bee uploads his latest track to SoundCloud he is a creator of user generated content.”
