Marketing Information

Instagram quickly become the face of visual social media after its founding in 2010. Prior to Instagram and other new social media websites / apps like Pinterest and Snapchat, social media was largely about text content and people. Instagram’s most popular feature was the ability to apply instant, pre-set, photo filters to images and make them look more professional before sharing them with others. The app doesn’t allow or display a lot of text and posts on the site are not allowed to link to other websites or other posts internally. After the success of Snapchat, Instagram’s parent company began looking for ways to compete which resulted in Instagram Stories, Snapchat-like videos / photo posts that can be augmented with graphics, gifs, and other information and are only displayed for 24 hours. Stories can be saved as “highlights” which appear above the posts on a users profile and allow those stories to appear for more than the 24 hour limit. Content discovery on Instagram largely happens when users see content shared by their friends into stories or via hashtags.

Marketers can take advantage of Instagram in 3 distinct ways:

  • Organic Social Media Posts
  • Organic Social Media Stories
  • Paid Social Advertising – note this is powered by Facebook Ads
