Announcement: Launch of Subscription System for WordPress

September 22nd, 2026 – Today we released a new WordPress plugin called Subscription System that gives publishers a new way to turn their website content into highly customizable free and paid email subscriptions OR into a subscription work service.

The plugin acts as a toolbelt for WordPress websites wanting to offer subscriptions, giving them premium tools previously locked away by expensive monthly or yearly fees.

Currently Subscription System offers 2 flavors:

  • Work subscriptions – Designed for physical labor subscriptions like weekly lawn maintenance or annual window washing.
  • Content subscriptions – Designed for publisher’s and their audiences to build the most customizable email notification system that can double as a revenue stream for a publisher.

Work / Service Subscriptions

Service Based Businesses Can Easily use Subscription System + Stripe to setup a physical labor or other type of work subscription system. The plugin comes complete with a “worklog” function that allows the service business to post work notes recording dates and times work was performed.

The combination of our system + the worklog + Stripe should help keep chargeback losses to a minimum for those offering subscription services.

Features

Here are some of the primary features included in the Work Subscriptions version of Subscription System:

  1. Pricing tables
  2. Worklog to track work completed
  3. Worklog viewer for managers to view worklog
  4. User account for subscriptions
  5. Users can pause subscription

Content Subscriptions

Instead of asking visitors to sign up for one traditional newsletter where every subscriber receives essentially the same emails, Subscription System allows readers to choose the specific topics they want to receive notifications about.

Publishers can allow users to subscribe based on WordPress Categories, Tags, or combinations of Categories and Tags.

For example, a local news website could allow someone to subscribe to the Dallas category while selecting keywords or Tags such as Restaurants, Real Estate, and Things To Do.

When the publication publishes new content matching that reader’s selected interests, Subscription System can notify them according to the subscription options made available by the publisher.

Free and Paid Content Notifications

One of the primary reasons we built Subscription System was to give publishers another potential way to monetize their content without necessarily placing that content behind a paywall.

Publishers determine which types of notifications are free and which require a paid subscription.

For example, a publisher could offer:

A free weekly digest containing new content matching the reader’s selected topics
A paid subscription for immediate notifications whenever matching content is published

This allows the underlying articles to remain publicly accessible while creating a paid product around the speed, convenience, and customization of discovering that content.

For some types of publishers, knowing that an article was published can be almost as valuable as the article itself.

Reader-Controlled Subscriptions

Subscription System is designed around giving readers control over what they receive instead of forcing them into a predefined newsletter.

Depending on how the publisher configures the plugin, users can select the Categories and Tags they are interested in when subscribing and can later modify those selections.

Readers can add additional topics, remove topics they no longer care about, change their subscription, or cancel it entirely.

The goal is to make the subscription behave less like a traditional mailing list and more like a personalized notification system for a publication.

Features

Here are some of the primary features included in the Content Subscriptions version of Subscription System:

  1. Allow readers to subscribe to WordPress Categories
  2. Allow readers to subscribe to WordPress Tags
  3. Allow readers to combine Categories and Tags into customized subscriptions
  4. Create free subscription options
  5. Create paid subscription options
  6. Determine which notification frequencies or subscription types require payment
  7. Offer immediate notifications for newly published matching content
  8. Offer digest-style notifications
  9. Allow users to select the topics they want to follow
  10. Allow subscribers to add topics to an existing subscription
  11. Allow subscribers to remove topics from an existing subscription
  12. Allow subscribers to modify their subscription preferences
  13. Allow subscribers to cancel their subscription
  14. Add subscription opportunities throughout a WordPress website

Why We Built It

Publishers have spent years building audiences on social media platforms, search engines, and other third-party services only to watch those platforms increasingly control whether their audiences ever see the content they publish. If you’ve read our guide on building an Owned Audience you’ll know about Rented Audiences, which make it nearly impossible to reach your fans on a consistent basis.

Email remains one of the few major channels where publishers can establish a more direct relationship with their readers.

But the traditional newsletter and newsletter platforms like Substack have their own problem: not every reader wants every story, too much of things the subscriber doesn’t want and your emails end up in buried in a folder deep in their email system.

We wanted to build a system where the publication creates the content, but the reader determines which parts of that publication are important enough to reach their inbox.

At the same time, we wanted publishers to have the ability to determine whether access to faster or more sophisticated notifications should be something they give away for free or turn into a new recurring revenue stream.

The result is Subscription System.
