Description

This spreadsheet was put together by SEO Joe Youngblood to help SEOs determine what link building tactics were and were not potentially targets of Google’s devastating Penguin algorithm. At the time Joe worked for a different agency who used this resource to help generate new leads but have long since abandoned it. The spreadsheet has been cleaned up slightly removing any mention of that previous agency, but other than that remains a pristine copy of what link building in 2013 looked like. Many of the listed link building tactics considered a high risk for attracting Google’s Penguin algorithm are still in use by SEOs today. Using this list a new SEO can better understand why some link building tactics may not be used at an agency or may not be working to help a client be successful. The spreadsheet also contains various anchor text tactics and discussions as well as links to references.

This should not be used to determine what link building tactics to employ for today’s SEO. However, avoiding anything marked as “high” on this list is likely a good way to avoid being penalized by Google or wasting your efforts.
